Mick Tucker - Sad News.
Steve Priest has asked me to place this message on the MB:

*************
"I am afraid to have to inform everyone that Mick Tucker passed away about around midday today. It was from complications brought on by the leukemia he survived five years ago. Please respect his wife and family. We are all really devastated at his passing and will miss him dreadfully."

Steve Priest
*************

There is nothing further I can add to this dreadful news at the moment.

...more news will be posted on HSH News section.

God Bless Mick!
There will only ever have been one Man with the Golden Arm!

I had the opportunity to meet him through Henrik's concern last November, after all these years. We were invited in, treated with a beer each and I got to ask those questions about his drumming duels with himself, and other things that I've had on my mind since the 70s. He signed my copy of OTR, and looked a bit pleased when I told him that there were more Sweet albums than ever in the racks of Tower Records at Picadilly. Thanks for the music Mick!

I am so so sad right now. My thoughts are with his family, with Steve and with Andy who I'm sure feel like they have lost a brother.

Re: Mick
It may only be pop music, but I think most will agree that Mick's spirit has enriched the lives of everyone on HSH. May he live on in our thoughts, and best wishes to all his friends and family.

And how much all of you who caught his recent appearances with Elliot Tuffin will now be able to appreciate even more those last glimpses of the man.

Heavenly Music
No words can express my sadness today. The only comfort is knowing that Heaven now has two of the
most brilliant musical talents in the world. I keep the spirit that Mick is now drumming for Brian who is
singing in the Heavens.
Steve and I spoke for some time the other night and I know this is devestating for him. It will be hard for all
of us but keep in mind that he is at peace now.

Re: Mick
I met Michael in 1983. He was a regular in the pub where I lived. Meeting him was one of the scariest moments of my life. My then girlfriend said to me one evening "There is someone downstairs I think you might like to meet". When I walked into the bar my chin hit the floor. Eve introduced us, he smiled, shook my hand warmly and bought me a pint. RESULT!!!!

The man was a God. He was wearing a black tee shirt and leather trousers and frankly looked a million dollars. I remember very well uttering the immortal line "I have all your records" and feeling a total pratt afterwards but he just laughed and then stood talking music with me for an hour or more.

Over the coming weeks and months we would meet from time to time either at the Coach or in the Clarendon Arms on a Friday night, where I would sit, spellbound, hour after hour, listening to tales of the 70's. He told me some great ones too!

I genuinely liked him a great deal. Sure, you felt special walking into a pub with him, but that star thing was never my game. I just enjoyed the company of a guy who knew he had done all there was to do in music and was under no personal pressure to settle for anything other than the very highest quality.

We talked often of the various offers to reform the band. The line I remember him using more than any other was "It HAS to be big!!" Kinda said it all. He knew he had made his mark in musical history and was not about to compromise his own high personal standards. Listen to any of Mick's work, and thank God we have a lot of it to refer to, and you can hear with your own ears the standards he worked to.

To cut a long story short, I moved away in early '85 I think, and did not see Mick again, until one morning, about 18 months later, I was in Watford drawing cash out from an ATM when I heard "Allo Mate" behind me. Guess who? He was literally off to Heathrow to go touring with Andy. Australia I think it was. We chatted for 5 minutes or so, said our goodbyes.............. and I never saw him again.

I have very special memories that I will treasure forever. I'm sure many of you who were fortunate enough to meet him will equally treasure your own personal memories. Mick crammed two lives into his one, and while it is tragic he has left us so early, his work and personality have touched many people all over the world and will continue to do so for many years to come I'm certain.

Naturally all our hearts go out to Janet and Ayston at this awful time, but maybe it's appropriate to also spare a thought for Elliott Tuffin who has been a very good friend to Mick during times that were less than wonderful. He refused to give up on his mate and appeared to always be around to lift Mick's spirits when maybe he wasn't feeling so great. It is also worth mentioning that he is the only person who managed to get Mick back up on stage in recent years. I know that Mick enjoyed those evenings enormously. Well done Sunshine!!

I kinda had this picture in my mind when I heard this awful news. Brian at the top of this huge staircase with a few of the boys behind him...Hendrix, Lennon, Holly etc and Brian's outstretched arm holding a pair of sticks saying "Come on man, we got a gig!!"

God Bless Michael and thank you for being a mate, and an inspiration to many people, more than you ever realised!

Marc.

P.S. There is sadly another star in the sky tonite. Country legend Waylon Jennings died today aged 64.

Re: Mick Tucker - Sad News.
I am also truly saddened to hear this news; I really am. It appeared that Mick was slowly recovering, almost to the point of taking a stab at the sticks again with Elliott. Mick fought a long and hard battle with luekemia, and I'm sure in his mind he never wanted to give up. I know this is not nearly the same, but my Dad also has a form of luekemia. However, he has been fortunate enough to take the new drug Gleevec, which really has been a wonder drug for him. It's too bad Mick couldn't take advantage of it as well.

It was ironic, but before I heard this news, one of my co-worker buddies had borrowed and was listening to Desolation Blvd. (really!) He insisted that I listen to a message he left me on my phone. I pick it up, and all I hear is Mick's GREAT drumming in the infamous intro to Ballroom Blitz. He rushed back into my office and said that he just HAD to play that for me. In retrospect, I'm so glad he did.

I regret that I never had the chance to meet Mick in person, but I do have a wonderful momento from him. With the help of my Sweet co-hort Ms. L.A., he signed my most prized Creem magazine from 1976. When he first signed it, it was against the black background of the photo in the article, and it couldn't be seen well. So he signed it again and put an arrow pointing to the "error" and writing "Sorry!". I was so tickled that he went to as much trouble for an autograph from someone he didn't even know!

I too will never forget Mick, but we all know now that he is in a better place and no longer in any pain, even if he kept it to himself. He's probably with Brian right now as I reply here.

Rest In Peace, Greatest Drummer In The WORLD...

Re: Mick Tucker - Sad News.
From Andy Scott:

Mick Tucker was the best drummer around in the 70's. I played in the same band as him and was proud to do so. I feel extreme sadness therefore that he has now left us and my heart goes out to Janet and Ayston with their sad loss.

Miss you Mick - and then there were two.

Re: Mick Tucker - Sad News.
The past few months mark the second time in 25 years that I've been inspired to check out what was happening with my teenage rock idols.

The first time was February 1997, just in time to hear of Brian's passing. Now this.

Mick, your drumming on Ballroom Blitz opened a door in my heart. I will always remember The Man With the Golden Arm twirling his drumsticks on stage in Detroit in February 1976.
