Andy Scott's
SWEET SOUNDS
AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY SPECIAL

The SweetOne of glam-rock's biggest stars made his debut as a radio presenter on BBC Wiltshire Sound this August Bank Holiday Monday.

Andy Scott - lead guitarist with THE SWEET - took to the air between 1200 and 1400 with Andy Scott's Sweet Sounds, featuring a wide ranging selection of music from the 1970's.

Andy's arrival attracted some big names of the music business to the programme:

Joe Elliott, lead singer with rock band Def Leppard,

The queen of glam-rock, Suzi Quatro,

Rob Davis, lead guitarist with Mud - who's now a very successful songwriter ... eg: Kylie's new single Can't Get You Outa My Head - hear it on BBC Wiltshire Sound!

Flo and Eddie from The Turtles (Happy Together; Elenore; She'd Rather Be With Me) who also provided the backing vocals for many of Mark Bolan's hits with T Rex,

Carl Palmer from the legendary Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Programme Producer Dan Chisholm said there were a few surprises amongst the hits.

"I expect listeners thought it would be wall-to-wall rock music for two hours," he said,

"But Andy talked with great authority about the music he played - ranging from Hendrix to the Carpenters and with the star guests he'd got taking part.

"It goes without saying it was a great listen.
But if you missed it - here are some extracts:

Andy Scott article for HSH Website

There's a famous phrase imprinted on the mind of every radio broadcaster - never work with animals or children. I'd also add
musical heroes to that quote, having interviewed many pop stars who had clearly lost sight of the public who bought their music
in the first place.

Not so with Andy Scott of The Sweet.

I first interviewed him back in 1985 and he struck me as a really nice guy. On hearing that I was a great fan of the band (they were
my first concert in 1973) he said he would send me some of his recent solo work. Much to my amazement, he did.

Earlier this year, when asked to come up with a bank holiday programme, I discovered he lived in Wiltshire. I rang to ask him if he'd agree to being involved in a programme looking back on thirty years of The Sweet. I was delighted he agreed ... and Sweet Life was born.

After that programme, he said he fancied following in the footsteps of one of his big friends Suzi Quatro by presenting his own radio show .. but didn't know if he could do it. I took the idea to BBC Wiltshire Sound's managing editor Tony Worgan who thought it a great idea and immediately assigned me as producer to the project. Andy meanwhile rang many of his showbiz contacts to invite them to appear, before we set about the impossible task of choosing a wide cross-section of hits from the 1970s to create a balanced programme. He still cannot believe the classic tracks we had to leave out ... but that's for the future.

Andy Scott's Sweet Sounds attracted an amazing amount of feedback .. not only from listeners, but fans of the band across Europe who were unable to hear the programme. Sadly, because of music copyright restrictions, we cannot provide copies of the programme in its entirety, but I hope the extracts here on the website will give you a flavour of his excellent radio debut.

  3. Interview with Joe Elliott of Def Leppard.

By the way, it's important I tell you that Andy is one of the nicest and hospitable people I have ever met. His wife, Maddy ... and pet dog Dylan have made me very welcome at their beautiful home on the Marlborough Downs. I hope the forthcoming new album gets the recognition it (and he) deserves. Meantime, watch out for Sweet Sounds 2 ... its bound to happen on BBC Wiltshire Sound!!
