Sherman very kindly gave me a lift up
there early afternoon and I navigated him round the entire City of Peterborough just to get to our Travelodge.
Owen and Neil were already there as was Cheryl and with Eileen on her way, this
would prove to be a HSH haven!
Actually Cheryl lived up to HSH name this weekend. She was an Angel cos she kindly offered to drive Sherm
and me to and from the gig (i.e. so we could drink). And she was Lost because
a) this was Peterborough - the most awkward place in the
world to go from A to B
and...
b) hey, this IS Cheryl we're talking about here!
Anyway, the first abuse of privilege was to ask if we could go via Woody's
hotel where, according to his daughter, he was already in the bar!! *shame!* We downed a quick couple of pints with him (£3 a pint with a
napkin) and I did my best to embarrass his son Josh on his 12th birthday. We
sang to him way too loud for a sedate hotel, spilt chocolate cake on the floor
and Woody put a sink plunger on his head. As you do.
Cheryl had promised to get the Cresset early, to meet with Gill and help Harvey set his gig up. 14 wrong turns
later
and
we were there...!!!
We blagged out way in as all was shut and were just
in time to hear the band going through their soundcheck.
For me it was particularly interesting to watch the band behind the scenes,
working at getting everything just right. The attention to detail that goes
into getting that "Sweet" sound is amazing. Monitors tweaked up and
down, KRS making tiny adjustments everywhere. Sherman got his first hearing of Lost
Angels and Windy City. Being 2 newer numbers, the band
were still working on the arrangements - Steve and Andy deciding how to double
up the guitar solos then all four singing acapella to
tidy up the "ahhhh" harmonies in Windy
City. Just for the record, Bruce was NOT singing the wrong
notes.............Tony was just putting him off, that's all!!
Tony started dabbling with the bass line of Turn It Down and a debate started
on whether they should play it tonight....or Set Me Free. I wanted to shout out
"DO 'EM BOTH!", but thought better of it. As it happens, neither made
the setlist on the night.
It seemed there was little for us to help with so we went in search of the
Cresset Restaurant, about as easy as the Peterborough Road System. In the end
Sherman and I opted for a liquid lunch, where we were soon met up with other
HSH regulars. Woody's lot arrived, Josh it seems was now 14 and therefore allowed
in the bar.
I gave all my ready cash to Kevin, Carl and Henka in
return for Sweet goodies before getting into a major hoo-hah about ticket
allocation with my colleagues. Who KNOWS where you ended up Uncle Stewart, but
I trust you saw the show from somewhere!
The support act was nice and went down well enough,
though I must admit my attention was elsewhere. The 007 theme came on and
Bailey Boy started pressuring me to get out and go down the front. I was
reluctant to move before Harvey Goldspink as it was
HIS gig after all, but within 20 seconds of Hellraiser
starting was firmly in my poll position - staring up Andy's nose and playing
bongos on Tony's monitor!!!
The band crashed through the set, it was a joy to hear those new numbers again.
Tony's singing really suits that style and I hope the band make these regular
features in future.
Andy sang Dream On as a dedication from Harvey to his wife. I saw them have a
little cuddle and did I detect a little tear in Mrs Goldspink's eye? A sweet moment.
Tony and Steve Grant fought it out for the "larging
it up" rocking trophy whilst Brooce was
noticeably awesome with his drumming. Almost as good as his finger shadow
puppets! Mr Scott was on fine form, almost throwing
everyone by launching into the Nursery Rhyme Medley on the spur of the moment!
As for me, I multi-tasked by swapping between air guitar and air drums with
consummate ease, playing wherever they needed me really!
It was a big set, a long set but like all good things it was over too quickly.
The band came out and did loads of signings and photos with everyone,
we just managed to scramble one more quick beer before closing time. A
resounding success all round.
We owe an enormous debt to Steve "Harvey" Goldspink
for laying on the whole thing, not just Peterborough but cajoling the band into doing
new numbers in the set. Yes I am eternally chuffed that I got to see the band 3
times this week, for me its all over for a while but their show goes on ands
they're now taking Germany by storm. There's just a one off summer gig to look
forward to and another Glitz tour planned for next year. I'll miss Cockroach
etc but I'll be down the front "Poppa Rumbo"-ing
like a good 'un as usual.
Andy DID say they're playing at Shane Ritchie's 40th birthday party in a couple
of weeks time...now THAT would be a gig to get into! I wonder if they'll need
an "air-bongo" player....?
Well....I'm glad I didn't have anything else to say on the matter! I'll collect
my Verbal Diarrhoea Award - otherwise known as the
"Baba O'Jimmy" - on my way out....
